What is CVE-2026-85102?

CVE-2026-85102 is a vulnerability classified as Improper Certificate Validation, affecting Quantum Security Gateway (affected versions: R82.10 with Jumbo Hotfix Take 43 or below, R82 with Jumbo Hotfix Take 125 or below, and other affected versions). This vulnerability is rated Critical, with a CVSS score of 9.8. This vulnerability has been observed being exploited in the wild.

Overview

Original source data

Improper certificate trust validation during VPN negotiation in Check Point Quantum Security Gateway may allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the Gateway.

Affected products and scope

The following products and branches are identified as affected:

  • Check Point Quantum Security Gateway: R82.10 with Jumbo Hotfix Take 43 or below.
  • Check Point Quantum Security Gateway: R82 with Jumbo Hotfix Take 125 or below.
  • Check Point Quantum Security Gateway: R81.20 with Jumbo Hotfix Take 165 or below.
  • Check Point's later advisory also lists Security Gateway and Spark Firewall deployments on R81 (EOS), R81.10 (EOS), R81.10.X, R81.20, R82, R82.00.X, and R82.10 as affected. The returned advisory content does not expose exact take/build boundaries for every additional branch, so the status of branches outside the specific boundaries above must be confirmed against the Check Point advisory rather than inferred from another branch.

Technical details

The flaw is in certificate trust validation during VPN negotiation. Check Point identifies the relevant area as VPN certificate handling in Security Gateway, with certificate data supplied during negotiation forming the relevant input. A remote attacker can reach the VPN service without authentication or user interaction, and the validation failure may lead to arbitrary code execution on the Gateway. The available evidence does not identify the precise trust decision, parser, or code path that fails, so it should not be characterized as a specific issuer bypass or parsing defect. Actual exposure depends on the VPN features and release branches deployed.

Exploitability

The vulnerability is remotely reachable and can be exploited by an unauthenticated attacker without user interaction; the record describes the attack complexity as low. The supplied record marks the issue as known exploited and publicly exploitable. Check Point has reported ongoing exploitation attempts against Spark customers globally, with attempts originating from anonymization infrastructure including VPN services and proxies. Observed certificate subjects include CN=vpn,OU=users,O=global, CN=vpn-user,OU=users,O=global, and CN=vpnuser,OU=users,O=global, but Check Point states that this list is not exhaustive.

Technical impact

Successful exploitation can result in arbitrary code execution on Check Point Quantum Security Gateway before authentication. The technical outcome may affect the Gateway's confidentiality, integrity, and availability, depending on the privileges obtained by the executed code and the deployment configuration. At the organizational level, an attacker could potentially disrupt VPN service, alter policy or security behavior, or affect traffic and systems protected behind the Gateway; these are possible consequences, not evidence of a particular incident. Exploitation requires reachability to the affected VPN flow, but the available record indicates that credentials and user interaction are not required.

Business impact

Code execution on a Security Gateway can undermine a key network control point and affect VPN availability, firewall enforcement, and services transiting the Gateway. Depending on the privileges obtained by the compromised process, possible consequences include service disruption, changes to security behavior, and loss of confidentiality or integrity for traffic and configuration. Active exploitation increases the operational risk for unpatched systems and may require emergency maintenance. The available record does not identify a specific breach, victim, or ransomware incident, so compromise of any individual deployment cannot be concluded from the vulnerability record alone.

Remediation

  1. Prioritize identifying every Security Gateway and Spark Firewall running an affected branch, including deployments on the EOS branches R81 or R81.10.
  2. Install the applicable Check Point fix for each product, release branch, and Jumbo Hotfix Take. Check Point confirms that fixes are available, but the returned evidence does not state the exact fixed take/build for every branch, so a later take must not be assumed to be fixed without vendor confirmation.
  3. Follow the Check Point advisory for installation, validation, and upgrade guidance. If immediate installation is not possible, use only the alternative mitigation or upgrade guidance published by the vendor for the specific deployment.
  4. After remediation, review Mobile Access logs and activity originating from suspicious users for signs of exploitation before the update. If suspicious activity is found, treat the Gateway as potentially compromised and follow the organization's incident response process.

Detection

Perform the following checks:

  • Inventory all Check Point Security Gateway and Spark Firewall deployments, recording the product, release branch, and Jumbo Hotfix Take, then compare them with the affected boundaries.
  • Review logs for anomalous certificate-based Mobile Access logins. Search for observed subjects such as CN=vpn,OU=users,O=global, CN=vpn-user,OU=users,O=global, and CN=vpnuser,OU=users,O=global, but do not limit the search to those values.
  • Check for second-stage activity originating from suspicious users logged in through Mobile Access, especially internal port scans or service scans.
  • Compare the installed state with the applicable Check Point fix and take/build guidance. The absence of these signs does not prove that a system is safe or was not compromised.
